Conclusive answers to crucial questions
If you, dear Readers, have repeatedly encountered profound, very important Questions in your life that neither the churches nor science have been able to answer, how did you feel? How did you react? Was it convincing to you that there must be many topics that can never be answered? Or did a small flame burn deep within you, a tiny certainty that there must be true, logical Answers somewhere?
If God is as Great as all religions say, does He have a reason to withhold important Knowledge from us that is indispensable for a meaningful Life on this Earth?
To give a few examples:
• Where do humans come from, why do we live on this Earth, and what happens after death?
• What exactly can we imagine when we think of the ‘soul’? Is there such a thing as rebirth, i.e. the migration of this soul?
• Are there any Laws that govern our lives?
• Do our health and well-being have anything to do with our lifestyle and attitudes?
• Is fate blind, arbitrary and cruel – or is there, on the contrary, a loving guidance behind it?
• Can we influence the often-feared fate – and how?
• Was Jesus of Nazareth really the ‘Son of God’ and was his crucifixion a necessary Act of Redemption willed by God? Could he really have been born without conception and ascended physically into heaven?
• Do occultism and mediumship exist – and do we need them for a spiritually oriented life?
• How can we grasp realities that lie beyond our brains?
• How is Creation structured? And where can God be found? Can we come into direct contact with the Creator?
This is just a small selection of the many questions that are still unclear and – for example, between different religions – controversial, but which are answered clearly and comprehensively in the ‘Grail Message’ in a profound way. It is also impressive that many points were explained there 80 years ago that have often only recently been discovered in part in the latest research!
Who can prove it to me ...?
Now, however, one could object: ‘Who can prove to me that what is contained in the Work “In the Light of Truth” is really the Truth and not just another opinion among many?’
One can understand this objection, because in this age of information overload, the inflationary expansion of esoteric ideas and the appearance of more and more ‘new prophets,’ it would be unwise to accept everything offered without checking it out. On the other hand, such a statement also reveals a certain danger.
We, as people living often in a spoiled society, have become accustomed to a phenomenon that can prove very disastrous from a spiritual point of view: We are used to making demands in almost all areas of life when we have paid for something. We are used to being courted, as a huge market of goods and services is waiting for our money and makes us, as customers, ‘king’! That is why we feel quite entitled to judge whether we like something or not, whether, for example, a book we have bought meets our standards and expectations or not, and the idea that it could also be the other way round, that a work makes demands on us, that we must therefore fulfil certain requirements, is likely to be very strange to most people and often perceived as unreasonable.
But this is precisely what makes the Grail Message a refreshingly uncomfortable and, in its independence, extremely valuable guide: it requires every reader to examine what is presented seriously, but primarily with their intuitive perception, not exclusively intellectually. However, examining something with our intuitive perception requires something that is one of the most difficult things for us today: we cannot stand outside what is being said as untouched observers, but must involve ourselves if we are truly serious about seeking the Truth.
This is often uncomfortable or even painful, but when it comes to the ‘Light of Truth,’ then uncomfortable things must also be illuminated. A holistic and all-encompassing picture of world events must also include all the dark sides and their causes. It is precisely these that must be given special weight in a truthful examination if recovery is to be possible.
It is not difficult to understand that we humans, through our actions, words, thoughts and inner attitudes, have caused utter chaos and poisoned the Earth and its subtle environment. Many critically thinking people will readily accept all this, but often with one crucial exception: that exception is themselves! It is always the others who are to blame for all the trouble: the politicians, the business leaders, the unloved boss, the obnoxious colleagues, the irritable or insensitive spouse and their spoiled children, the oversensitive friends... It is always the others who make the paradise we would like to have impossible.
But it is precisely here that the Grail Message convincingly demonstrates that the foundation for a better world can only ever come from the individual, from our willingness to consistently change ourselves for the better! It can be formulated even more uncompromisingly: every person can actually only truly change one other person: themselves – and thus, by setting a good example, help their fellow human beings who are also willing to do so!
This demand on every reader quickly confronts them with the decision to either undertake the necessary self-change with all the associated effort and, not infrequently, initial pain, because only by taking an unsparing look at reality can healing actually be brought about – or to continue their life in the old, unchanged way; which, of course, will have unpleasant consequences, regardless of whether we want to admit it or repress it! However, those who commit themselves to critical self-examination and are ready for the necessary changes will find, as the author writes, a ‘light and a staff’ for their path in the Grail Message ... and in their own experience the proof that they have truly found the ‘Light of Truth’ in this work.
A Message to the Human Spirit
The author of the Grail Message was born in Germany and bore the civil name Oskar Ernst Bernhardt, but wrote his work ‘In the Light of Truth’ under the name Abd-ru-shin, which means, among other things, ‘Servant of the Light’.
In contrast to today's advertising strategies, which focus more on the author than on the content, it is particularly refreshing to note that Abd-ru-shin places everything personal far in the background and demands that the matter itself be examined, not the person! He thus also decisively rejects any cult of personality!
The Grail Message consists of three volumes with a total of 168 lectures, from which I have selected a few earlier ones to make it easier to get started.
Each volume begins with a leitmotif that starts right at the beginning with a demand and a highly challenging task:
‘FREE YOURSELF FROM ALL DARKNESS!
HE WHO MAKES NO EFFORT TO GRASP THE WORD OF THE LORD ARIGHT BURDENS HIMSELF WITH GUILT!’
These two sentences alone make it clear that the Grail Message is primarily addressed to our spiritual Core, to the Spirit, and only secondarily to the brain and its product, the mind. For only the spirit, that is, the actual inner human being, knows – beyond all philosophical debates – that it is still more or less connected with the ‘darkness’ (the nature and origin of which will be described in later lectures) and that, furthermore, it has not yet correctly understood ‘the Word of the Lord’, i.e. the Will of God, and must therefore make an effort if it wants to progress in its necessary development.
The proof that ‘the Word of the Lord’ has not yet been properly understood by mankind in general lies quite simply in the fact that there are countless religious communities, many of which claim to have the only correct interpretation of the respective ‘Holy Scriptures’ and often fight each other bitterly. Where there is real Truth and therefore consistency, such a thing is impossible by its very nature! For where there is still room for dispute, there is a lack of clarity and therefore, of course, a lack of Truth!
This struggle also addresses the important Law of Creation of Constant Motion, namely one's own movement, which, like all Laws of Creation, must always be observed and fulfilled. For it is only through our own efforts that we can regain access to the authority within us that is connected to the Truth and can therefore also recognise the Truth, to our Spirit, which has nothing to do with the brain and the mind. Since every human being carries this Principle of Truth within themselves, they are therefore also capable of recognising Truth beyond all denominations and distinguishing it from false conclusions, provided they make a serious effort to do so.
‘Belief becomes Conviction’
The preface to the Grail Message is divided into several parts. It begins with a great promise:
‘The bandage falls, and belief becomes conviction. Liberation and redemption lie only in conviction!’
Almost everything in our culture that has to do with questions of meaning, the afterlife, religion and God is commonly described with the term ‘belief’. But what ‘belief’ really means is proven by the everyday use of this word. When we answer a question with ‘I believe...’, it almost always means ‘I suspect, I speculate, I assume’, which is far removed from conviction and knowledge. (The connotation of uncertainty is often stronger in German than in English.) Isn't this also the case with ‘questions of belief’?
Is our belief in God really certainty, conviction – or is it not rather a more or less vague hope, perhaps even an unreflective adherence to the beliefs of our parents or our religious community?
Does conviction not also imply knowledge? But do we know God's will, His laws and the meaning and purpose of our lives? Can we even do without this knowledge if we want to progress spiritually in our development?
A person who is seriously searching will have to say ‚no’ if they are honest with themselves!
And this brings us straight to the prerequisites that must be fulfilled by those who want to truly benefit from the ‘Grail Message’:
‘I am addressing earnest seekers only. They must be able and willing to examine this matter objectively! Religious fanatics and irresponsible enthusiasts may hold aloof, for they are detrimental to the Truth. As for the malevolent and prejudiced, they shall find their sentence in the very words.
The Message will strike only those who still carry within them a spark of truth, and the yearning to be true human beings. To all such it will become the shining light and staff. It will lead them unswervingly out of all the chaos of the present-day confusion.’
Serious searching means, among other things, being alert and flexible and testing what you read with your intuitive perception and with life itself, while at the same time setting aside your own baggage of wisdom, prejudices, fixed ideas and the jumble of other things you have learned, as these may well be wrong! Strictly speaking, this is a lifelong task that demands our full attention!
‘I am not founding a new Religion!’
And so that we do not immediately open a new drawer labelled ‘New Religions’ according to our way of thinking, which would make it difficult for us to grasp what is said below, here is another important clarification:
‘The following Word does not bring a new religion, but is intended as the torch to help all serious listeners or readers find the right path, which leads them to the longed-for height.’
This is the second mention of the driving force that can ultimately lead us upwards: the longing for true humanity, for light, for truth and for spiritual ascension to our original home, to paradise. And since we have completely lost our way spiritually and can no longer find the path so easily, the author of the Grail Message promises us the torch to do so, while the tools for development lie in our own abilities, not in the adoption of foreign, borrowed views from second, third or tenth hand!
‘Only he who bestirs himself can advance spiritually. The fool who uses extraneous aids for this, in the form of the ready-made opinions of others, only walks his path as if on crutches, while ignoring his own healthy limbs.
But the moment he boldly uses all the abilities which lie dormant within him awaiting his call, to help in his ascent, he is employing the talent entrusted to him in accordance with his Creator’s Will, and will easily overcome all obstacles that seek to divert him.
Therefore awake! Genuine faith lies only in conviction, and conviction comes solely through an inflexible weighing and examining! See that you are truly alive in the wonderful Creation of your God!’
